The online Cataloge Raisonné of Alfred Kornberger's oil paintings is based on the scientifically investigated publication by Franz Smola, »Alfred Kornberger (1933 - 2002). The Nude as Innovation« with a list of works by Monika and Gerald Ziwna and a foreword by Dieter Schrage, which was published in 2007.

This list of works created by Monika and Gerald Ziwna in 2007 included 1297 oil paintings of Kornberger. These works were produced in a period from the mid-1950s to the late 1990s. The catalogue has been updated with recent discoveries and completed with addenda in the database. We aim to keep the database in the latest state of research and would be pleased to receive additional information and comments from this website's users.

Comment on the Cataloge Raisonné

With the help of the artist's personal photo archive containing detailed notes and data it was possible to record the extensive Œuvre of the painter Prof. Alfred Kornberger accurately within a short period of time. The Catalogue Raisonné of the oil paintings is based exclusively on this material and our subsequent urgency at private as well as public collections regarding pictures and additional data.

Works which do not provide more detailed explanation about their disposition are in most cases either part of private collections or are lost (abroad).
Kornberger's photo archive does not contain reproductions of oil paintings from the period between 1993 and 1997. This cannot be explained by any creative break; we suppose that the artist did not document works from this period until the following year. This would explain the immense number of works documented for the period between 1994 and 1998. Additionally, we assume that Kornberger produced mainly drawings and water colour works during this period that served as drafts for his oil paintings.

We have categorized the oil paintings chronologically and aimed to consider the various motifs and stylistic forms. There are several works for which we could not find any provenance and which are also not documented by reproductions. The latter are listed without any image in the index. In some cases the available photo material was of such low quality that we decided to use black-and-white photographs instead. This pertains predominately to the early works.

Due to illness Alfred Kornberger had to give up the production of oil paintings in 2001. At the same time he stopped his painstakingly detailed documentation of works and didn't convey further personal notes.

In the last year of his life the artist focused on lithographs of former drawings which he mostly painted in water colour or with felt pen.

Alfred Kornberger passed away on March 31, 2002.
